Mission Statement

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry
profession in the United States. Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, it is the largest professional society for foresters in the
world. The mission of the Society of American Foresters is to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of
forestry; to enhance the competency of its members; to establish professional excellence; and, to use the knowledge, skills,
and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and
future availability of forest resources to benefit society. SAF is a nonprofit organization meeting the requirements of 501(c)3.

SAF members include natural resource professionals in public and private settings, researchers, CEOs, administrators, educators, and students.



2015 Multi-State SAF Conference — 02/19/2015

The OSAF in conjunction with the Louisiana and Texas state societies held a joint conference in Texarkana, Texas on January 27-29, 2015. Details of the conference along with the OSAF annual business meeting which was held during the conference are available from the link below.

OK Division hosts "Walk in the Forest" — 08/21/2014

Foresters and natural resource professional from the SAF, OK Forestry Services, OSU, and the City of Sand Springs Parks and Recreation Dept. will host a "Walk in the Forest" at the Keystone Ancient Forest west of Sand Springs, OK. The 3 mile trail will allow participants to learn about the unique ecoregion and forest type called the Cross Timbers. There will be educational stations and interpretive signs where you can learn about trees, the history and uniqueness of the Cross Timbers, and how professional foresters care for the forest. The walk will take about 1 1/2 hours and gates will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. There will be water, snacks, and other giveaways along with a special PLT station for kids. Ouachita SAF Fellows — 12/12/2012

The highest honor that can be bestowed on a member of the Society of American Foresters is that of Fellow.

Please consider nominating a worthy OSAF colleague for SAF Fellow. The attachment provides information regarding the OSAF nomination procedure. Completed nominations are due to Tom Kuzmic by January 7.

Ouachita SAF Strategic Plan — 03/05/2012

With leadership provided by Caroll Guffey at UAM, the Ouachita SAF has completed a strategic plan to guide the Society in future years.

The plan was approved by the OSAF Executive Committee at their last meeting and is now available for review and comment by the membership. The plan can be accessed by clicking on the link below.

Ouachita SAF Forestry Enhancement Award — 10/12/2010

Do you know of an SAF Chapter, civic group, school, youth organization, etc. that is interested in developing a forestry education project? If so, please let them know abut the Ouachita SAF Forestry Enhancement Award. This award provides up to $500 for selected projects over a two-year period.

The OSAF Executive Committee established this award in an effort to promote forestry education in the Oklahoma-Arkansas region, and encourages applications from interested indviduals and groups.
