OK Division hosts "Walk in the Forest" — 08/21/2014
Foresters and natural resource professional from the SAF, OK Forestry Services, OSU, and the City of Sand Springs Parks and Recreation Dept. will host a "Walk in the Forest" at the Keystone Ancient Forest west of Sand Springs, OK. The 3 mile trail will allow participants to learn about the unique ecoregion and forest type called the Cross Timbers. There will be educational stations and interpretive signs where you can learn about trees, the history and uniqueness of the Cross Timbers, and how professional foresters care for the forest. The walk will take about 1 1/2 hours and gates will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. There will be water, snacks, and other giveaways along with a special PLT station for kids. Ted Chancey — 07/02/2014
Ted Chancey, age 91, of Hot Springs, Arkansas passed away on June 28, 2014. Ted was born June 15, 1923 in Bryant, OK. He received his BS degree in forestry from the University of California, Berkley in 1949. He became a life-long forester and was a Senior Timber Agent for Weyerhaeuser. Ted was noted for his strong contribution to the ethical fiber of the Timber industry by his work on fair market valuation and his personal character. He was a consistent leader in the SAF throughout his entire professional career and was elected SAF Fellow in 1984 and was inducted into the Arkansas Foresters Hall of Fame in 2006. He also received many awards for his life time of service and achievements with both the Lion's Club and American Legion and was an active member of the Grand Avenue Methodist Church. Ted was preceded in death by his wife Donna Jean. He is survived by his daughter Karen Sutterfield (John) of Houston, TX and his son Gary Chancey of Hot Springs as well as 2 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. on July 3, 2014 at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home with Rev. George Rook officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may by made to The American Legion or the Lion's Club in his honor.
Quintus H. Herron — 07/02/2014
Quintus H. Herron, age 91, passed away on June 24th, 2014. He was born in McCurtain County, OK on May 24, 1923. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M (OSU) and also served in the Army Air Corp. Quintus, along with his father Leonard G. and his brother Joseph, started Herron Industries in 1944. Prior to its inception no one had planted and grown trees for crops in SE Oklahoma, but over decades of dedication Quintus and his family grew the venture to be one of the most productive in the South and a long term economic contributor for McCurtain County. Additionally, he and his brother built several sawmills and a retail lumber yard. Quintus was also co-founder of the Forest Heritage Center in Beavers Bend State Park and the Museum of the Red River. Quintus was elected as a Fellow in the SAF in 2003 and received numerous other awards including the 2001 Governor's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Agriculture, 2002 Distinguished Agriculture Alumnus from OSU, and 2013 Lifetime Service Award from the Forest Heritage Center. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Mary. He is survived by his son Don Herron (Mary) of Idabel, OK and his daughter Jan Herron (Gama Leyva) of Patagonia, AZ as well as 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. The family will host a memorial service at the Mary H. Herron Community Conference Center on July 26, 2014 at 2 pm.

The cancellation of the December 2013 meeting due to the ice storm was very disappointing to many of us. Thanks to the efforts of Rod Will and his committee, the speakers scheduled to present at the shortleaf pine meeting made those presentations through a series of webinars earlier this spring. For those of you whose schedule would not allow you to listen to the live presentations, the recorded shortleaf pine webinars are now available for viewing using the link below. OSAF Shortleaf Pine Webinar Series — 04/30/2014
Given the cancellation of our 2013 annual meeting, we missed a great learning opportunity. Fortunately, the speakers from the meeting have agreed to deliver the content in webinar form. The webinars will be every Monday at 3 pm CDT April 21st through May 19th. Each webinar will feature 2 speakers for 30-45 minutes each. To participate, you need to log on a few minutes before 3 pm using the directions provided in the link listed below. Should you not be able to attend the webinars on Mondays, they will be recorded and made available on the OSAF website. Each webinar will provide 1.5 hours of Category 1 CFE. To receive the credits, you will need to log onto the webinar using your name and afterwards email John Stewart (email@example.com) with your SAF ID number. The link listed below also provides the schedule of speakers and the specific topic they will address.

OSAF Foresters Fund helps sponsor Forestry Awareness Day program for students — 04/17/2014
In September 2013, 251 5th graders and 23 teachers participated in a Forestry Awareness Day program at Lake Wedington near Fayetteville, AR. The program was hosted by the Arkansas Forestry Association Education Foundation. Take home materials for each of the students was purchased with Foresters Fund grant money provided by the Ouachita Society of American Foresters. Hurliman receives Landowner award — 11/14/2013
Ed Hurliman was recently awarded the Landowner of the Year Award by the Okla. Dept. of Wildlife Conservation. His 11,000 acre Lone Rock Ranch in Pushmataha County has about 3,500 acres dedicated to wildlife habitat improvement. Hurliman participates in various habitat improvement programs offered through state and federal agencies. He is a DMAP (deer management assistance program) and WHIP (wildlife habitat improvement program) participant through which he has performed brush management on 350 acres and prescribed burning on at least 4,000 acres as well as constructing ponds for wildlife. Ed runs a successful forestry consulting and timber management business out of Broken Bow, OK and was named the 2011 SAF District IX Presidential Field Forester.
