Mission Statement

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) is the national scientific and educational organization representing the forestry
profession in the United States. Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot, it is the largest professional society for foresters in the
world. The mission of the Society of American Foresters is to advance the science, education, technology, and practice of
forestry; to enhance the competency of its members; to establish professional excellence; and, to use the knowledge, skills,
and conservation ethic of the profession to ensure the continued health and use of forest ecosystems and the present and
future availability of forest resources to benefit society. SAF is a nonprofit organization meeting the requirements of 501(c)3.

SAF members include natural resource professionals in public and private settings, researchers, CEOs, administrators, educators, and students.


OSAF Arkansas Division endowed scholarship fund for UAM students — 04/28/2016

Several years ago the OSAF Arkansas Division established a scholarship fund for forestry students at UAM. The Arkansas Division Executive Division proposes a renewed effort to raise funds so that the scholarship can become endowed. The goal is to reach an endowment level of $15,000. There is a signed Gift Agreement between UAM and the Arkansas Division that describes criteria for awarding the scholarship and gives a deadline of December 31, 2018 for raising the remaining funds. Address change for the National SAF office — 03/24/2016

The National SAF office has a new address as of February 1,2016. The new address is: 10100 Laureate Way, Bethesda, Maryland 20814. The physical location of the national office and all other contact information remain the same.

Oklahoma Division Spring Field Meeting: Restoration of the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker and the Pine-Bluestem Ecosystem — 03/24/2016

Registration for the meeting will begin at the USFS Ouachita National Forest Oklahoma Ranger District Visitor Center in Hochatown at 9:00 a.m. The meeting will consist of field stops in the Ouachita National Forest and McCurtain County Wilderness Area. Ouachita SAF facebook page — 12/21/2015

The Ouachita SAF now has a Facebook page for members to view recent activities of the OSAF. The page was created by Dr. Laurie Gharis at the University of Arkansas at Monticello and will be a great way for members to keep up with recent forestry happenings. 2015 Multi-State SAF Conference — 02/19/2015

The OSAF in conjunction with the Louisiana and Texas state societies held a joint conference in Texarkana, Texas on January 27-29, 2015. Details of the conference along with the OSAF annual business meeting which was held during the conference are available from the link below.

Ouachita SAF Fellows — 12/12/2012

The highest honor that can be bestowed on a member of the Society of American Foresters is that of Fellow.

Please consider nominating a worthy OSAF colleague for SAF Fellow. The attachment provides information regarding the OSAF nomination procedure. Completed nominations are due to Tom Kuzmic by January 7.

Ouachita SAF Strategic Plan — 03/05/2012

With leadership provided by Caroll Guffey at UAM, the Ouachita SAF has completed a strategic plan to guide the Society in future years.

The plan was approved by the OSAF Executive Committee at their last meeting and is now available for review and comment by the membership. The plan can be accessed by clicking on the link below.

Ouachita SAF Forestry Enhancement Award — 10/12/2010

Do you know of an SAF Chapter, civic group, school, youth organization, etc. that is interested in developing a forestry education project? If so, please let them know abut the Ouachita SAF Forestry Enhancement Award. This award provides up to $500 for selected projects over a two-year period.

The OSAF Executive Committee established this award in an effort to promote forestry education in the Oklahoma-Arkansas region, and encourages applications from interested indviduals and groups.
